Work Plan 2020 – 2023
INITIATIVE 2:
Expansion of Tools, Programs, Services, and Resources that are the Linchpin for College Preparation and Readiness, Especially for Middle School Students
Function:
Serve as a clearinghouse of existing resources for secondary schools that add value in the preparation of students for college.
Activity 1: College: Make it Happen (CMIH)
Since 1994, the ICC has published a suite of resources for middle school students and educators and convened CMIH events to inform middle school families and students about the steps to prepare for college. A new version of resources has been developed and launched in 2022. Current plans include informational sessions on the use of the materials which include augmented reality, videos, animated characters, and interactive capabilities.
Activity 2: Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP).
ICC oversees the fourth California GEAR UP grant awarded in 2017. In total, the GEAR UP Program has secured $105 million in federal funds. The grant focuses on enhancing classroom instruction to improve the academic achievement of low-income students attending schools in eight school districts across four regions of the state. The systemic approach model includes teacher professional development, instructional coaching, and intensive data analysis at the site level. WestEd collects and analyzes data for both formative and summative evaluation purposes.
Activity 3: Transfer Days/College Nights
The ICC has overseen the statewide Transfer Days/College Nights Program since the 1990’s offering opportunities for students and their families to meet with college representatives at central locations across the state. In conjunction with an intersegmental committee, the ICC develops and communicates the annual schedule for statewide Transfer Days/College Nights, which includes 250 events. Assessments by schools and higher educational institutions indicate that these events continue to be an important part of their college recruitment process.
